Sound and fur(r)y: Assessing the impacts of disturbance and entanglement on Australian fur seals to manage an uncertain future

  • Berninneit 91-97 Thompson Avenue Cowes, VIC, 3922 Australia (map)

Talk

Adam and Jess are two PhD researchers working with Australian fur seals at Seal Rocks to assess the impacts of vessel noise and marine debris on the population.

Adam is researching how to use thermal and colour drone-borne imaging to monitor plastic entanglement in Australian fur seals, as well as physiological analysis and behavioural tracking to examine its impact on their health, stress, and behaviour.

Jess is researching the impacts of vessel noise and disturbance on Australian fur seals using behaviour, indicators of health and stress, and monitoring of vessel visitation.

Their findings will be used to inform management regulations around Seal Rocks, with the goal of reducing disturbance and entanglements in a population facing an uncertain future.
