Orcas (Orcinus orca), are the undisputed marine apex predators. Their role in the ecosystem is crucial, and understanding their distribution, habitat use, foraging ecology, and the factors influencing these behaviours is key to assessing marine ecosystem health and the impact of environmental changes on both orcas and their prey.
In Australia, orca sightings have been reported nationwide, with some areas showing seasonal, predictable aggregations and others more sporadic encounters. They are also interacting with longline fisheries targeting blue-eye trevalla in the south-east. However, much about Australian orcas remains unknown, and stronger collaboration among researchers, fisheries, and the public is needed to fill these gaps.
Suitable for teens and adults.
