Endangered pygmy blue whales gather between November-May each year to feed on krill aggregations in the seasonal coastal upwelling system that extends from the west coast of Tasmania to the eastern Great Australian Bight. Prior to 1998, when the Blue Whale Study commenced, the presence of this globally significant blue whale feeding ground was unknown to science. Since then much has been learned about the whales’ distribution, feeding ecology, seasonal movements, behaviour, and migration. This population of blue whales has long been subjected to exploitation and disturbance by humans, which continues to this day.
